Glass Bending

So I had my third attempt attempt at glass bending yesterday using some scraps. Helen from Ceramics suggested using the kiln to cool the glass down slowly and it worked! No cracking! So i'm going to try again today. I think today I will try some more complex bends - bending the glass back on itself and trying to create a circular shape with the glass. We'll see how that goes.
I also sand blasted a mirror which makes it look like frosted glass, i'm going to project onto it later- I cant imagine it will reflect anything but the image projected will probably stick and it could be an interesting texture to project onto.

KINO GLAZ

Dziga Vertov believed his concept of Kino-Glaz, or "Cine Eye" in English, would help contemporary man evolve from a flawed creature into a higher, more precise form. He compared man unfavorably to machines:

“In the face of the machine we are ashamed of man’s inability to control himself, but what are we to do if we find the unerring ways of electricity more exciting than the disorderly haste of active people..."

"I am an eye. I am a mechanical eye. I, a machine, I am showing you a world, the likes of which only I can see" Dziga was quoted as saying.

TAKEN FROM WIKIPEDIA

is good.

What makes a good concept?

A good concept is thought provoking matter created by the mind of a wicked genius. From the outside a good concept is mysterious and visually stimulating and from the inside it will reveal hidden truths. When enough time is spent with the good concept the spectator will gain a deeper insight of the world, based on the perception of the artist who created the work. Although, a good concept is not biased. A good concept appreciates that art is highly subjective and each spectator will leave with his or her own understanding of the work. This is not something that the artist can steal, just as a person cannot tell another person exactly how or what to think.

Movement

I've been thinking of a way to tie in my video work and make a projection/video installation. The video is based on ideas of planetary motion.

There will be a large circular projection at the bottom of the room, like a plughole, black hole or vortex. Having a circular projection would be a development from previous third year work and it would give an interesting continuity to the moving image work I have created this year. The video would take on a form of “scratch video” using my own work and also some videos stolen from the Internet. Not only does a circular perspective imitate that of a lens it also challenges the boundaries of conventional rectangular projections.

The content of the work will be a series of videos relating to global concerns, natural phenomenon, pop culture, the mundane and technology old and new. The videos will appear rhythmically in bars of 4,8 and 16 beats at 130 b.p.m. The work relates to the shifting rhythm of the world and my perception of this therefore the speed of this movement will be associated with the music I listen to.

The moving images will not contain any digital “effects” filters; instead the work presented will be true to life or created by a digital or analogue glitch. The work consists primarily of the ocean; it will serve as a backbone to the work as the images will always go back to the sea. The world and the universe never stop; the motion of the ocean in particular, is relentless. The ocean is alive not only with its wild movements but also the mysterious creatures that live within it- most of whom are undiscovered or indefinable. When looking out to sea one cannot help but think of travel; an overwhelming sense of discovery, a natural curiosity as to what lies over the horizon. What does lie over the horizon? This is a massive transition period for everyone in fourth year, to present the ocean is a sign of optimism as change and discovery is on the horizon. The ocean is prehistoric, when humans dump rubbish in it or there is an oil spill it creates and forms a resistance and it keeps going strong. This is a fantastic metaphor for life.

Taken from my thoughts on the degree show and the proposal.

Bending Aluminum

I made some aluminum frames/models to assist the glass bending process however bending soda glass is quite a challenge. Most of the glass bends I made cracked when they were cooling. I might have to reconsider my approach. I have 10 bits of glass left and I have wasted 5 already! Although If I managed to get two bends without the glass cracking so maybe I can cut the glass and it would still work. However, the glass is not flat so I don't know if the company who would fill it with neon will take it like that. So many variables to consider.

El Wire

I bought some El Wire from Hong Kong - actually the weirdness of the situation is that its from Shen Zhen- the same district that the Apple factories are in where there are inhumane working conditions. So to have an artifact from there and to have added to this industry is sort of playing on my consciousness. However, I have been waiting on this el wire for some time now so I had a play.

I have found this circular mirror and have been thinking a lot about technology- mirrors are a form of disregarded technology. I am not sure where I am going to take this. The mirror acted as a sort of vortex creating an illusion of depth and space on the floor.

spacial awareness

Here I am looking at other artists work in the gallery space to provoke inspiration for my degree show and how I will arrange the space.

This stuff is very much in grayscale but i admire the way it is presented. There is a sort of unfinished feel to it. As though the artist could walk in at any minute and start creating, I like this feeling of presence. The circular shapes are a nice collection :)
This is an artists statement that I find really interesting and intellectual. I would like my artist statement to be this interesting! It also encouraged me to read John Tyndall's publication Six Lectures on Light. Really interesting stuff in there and some really beautiful diagrams.

I experienced Haroon Mirzas work at the British Art Show 7 at The GOMA , it was really interesting work and I spent a lot of time with the installation trying to work out how it worked. There was obviously a lot of interest in it as well as the security guard got talking to us and started telling us secrets about the work. It wasn't the same as this piece above.

What interests me a lot about the above work is the circular projection onto the screen- it inspired me to think of different ways of presenting my own circular projection. It got me thinking about projecting my work onto an object as apposed to a wall
.

Such cool TVS! did they make their own frames?? something to think about if I am going to be showing work on screens- customised frames.

I love this triangular projection. Interesting use of space.

I've been thinking a lot about space, as i have been trying to visualise my "space" at the degree show and place my work into the space imagined. I was told about this really good website called ilikethisart.net and it is in fact REALLY good! All of the pictures above are from this website. I have been looking primarily at interesting ways of hanging and displaying work in the gallery space. I have also been reading peoples artists statements and descriptions of their work which are often thought provoking.

In the beginning I though that I would have a lot of text at the show, but now i'm thinking that I would like the spectator to take away with them as much as possible from the art so if that involves some explanation i'm totally fine with that now. In fact I am going to take as much time ove rthe text as I am the art work.

"But, after all, the aim of art is to create space - space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live."

- Frank Stella (1986)
