Meg Cranston on ideas for curating an exhibition with John Baldessari
"They described all the things that couldn't be art: globes are not art, maps are not art, audio visual works are not art. We thought we'd do a show involving everything that wasn't art"
WHY ARE AudioVisual WORKS NOT ART? My world is falling apart. Are AV works not art? Is this something I have never been told but yet is general art critic knowledge...? HMPH.
At the time I don't think audio visual work was considered an art form. However this idea is pretty conceptual. Because something isn't art makes in art. Think Duchamp. I think this is an interesting quote as you may know Baldessari has A/V pieces. (I've seen them with my own eyes) And one of them is a personal favourite. I don't know when this exhibition was. But I'm sure you could find a similar quote concerning photography. Considering photography as an art form is heavily debated. HMPH indeed!
ReplyDeleteI think in the end they didn't go with that idea anyway. Could you hit me up with the names of some of his AV stuff? I have looked online but can't really find a lot!
