Meg Cranston on ideas for curating an exhibition with John Baldessari

"They described all the things that couldn't be art: globes are not art, maps are not art, audio visual works are not art. We thought we'd do a show involving everything that wasn't art"

WHY ARE AudioVisual WORKS NOT ART? My world is falling apart. Are AV works not art? Is this something I have never been told but yet is general art critic knowledge...? HMPH.

  1. At the time I don't think audio visual work was considered an art form. However this idea is pretty conceptual. Because something isn't art makes in art. Think Duchamp. I think this is an interesting quote as you may know Baldessari has A/V pieces. (I've seen them with my own eyes) And one of them is a personal favourite. I don't know when this exhibition was. But I'm sure you could find a similar quote concerning photography. Considering photography as an art form is heavily debated. HMPH indeed!

  2. I think in the end they didn't go with that idea anyway. Could you hit me up with the names of some of his AV stuff? I have looked online but can't really find a lot!
